Best Food Trucks on the Big Island
AlohaCalendar|May 21, 2026
Big Island doesn't pretend. The food truck scene here is less polished than Honolulu but punches harder — fresher fish, weirder fusions, owners who can tell you the boat that landed the ahi this morning.
## Kona side
### Da Poke Shack (Kailua-Kona)
Maybe the most famous poke on the island. Limu ahi shoyu, garlic sesame, and a wasabi mayo that's not for tourists. Don't show up after 1pm — they sell out.
### Umekes (now brick & mortar but truck origin)
Started as a food truck. The Hawaiian plate combo (kalua pig, lomi salmon, poi) is the local benchmark.
### Annie's Island Fresh Burgers (Holualoa)
Up in coffee country. Grass-fed Big Island beef, taro buns. Worth the drive up the hill.
## Hilo side
### Just Cruisin' Coffee (Hilo) — sometimes parked at Akaka Falls
Cold brew + breakfast tacos. The cold brew is what coffee should taste like.
### Pesto Pizza Truck (Kapaau)
Wood-fired oven on wheels. Margherita on a rainy Hilo day = a small miracle.
## Hamakua coast cruise
### Tex Drive In (Honoka'a)
Malasadas. That's it. That's the whole sentence. Order them filled (haupia, custard, or cinnamon-sugar) and warm.
## How to find what's open this week
Trucks move. Our today's events and Big Island weekend pages list pop-up food events as they happen — markets, brewery food trucks, beach park lunch rallies.
## What to skip
Anything labeled "tropical" in the name and inside Kona's main tourist drag. The good stuff is 2 minutes off the beaten path. Always.
