Best Maui Luaus in 2026 — Locals' Honest Guide
AlohaCalendar Editorial|May 22, 2026
Maui has the most concentrated luau scene in Hawaii — six big productions on a single island, three of them within 15 minutes of each other on the south shore. They're not the same.
If you're picking one, here's what we (locals) actually tell friends to book.
## Quick context: what makes a Maui luau different from Oʻahu
Two things, mostly:
1. **The Old Lāhainā Luau is widely considered the most traditional luau in Hawaii** — no Tahitian drums, no Samoan fire knife, focused entirely on Hawaiian history, hula, and music. If you want *Hawaiian* and not *Polynesian Revue*, this is the only place in the state that consistently delivers it.
2. **South Maui has the resort luau density.** Wailea has three major luaus within a 1-mile stretch — different vibes, different price points, all professionally produced.
If you're staying on Maui for less than a week and seeing one luau, the choice is usually between **Old Lāhainā** (Hawaiian-only, intimate) and **Te Au Moana / Drums of the Pacific** (full Polynesian show, big resort). Here's the full ranking.
## 1. Old Lāhainā Luau — Lāhainā (west side)
**Pricing:** ~$165-220 / adult · daily
**The most authentic luau in Hawaii.** The Old Lāhainā Luau has been running since 1986 and was rebuilt entirely after the 2023 Lāhainā wildfire. Their philosophy: only Hawaiian culture on stage. No Tahitian, no Samoan, no fire knife. Just hula kahiko (ancient), hula auana (modern), and the actual history of the Hawaiian Islands narrated by the kumu hula.
The food is also more traditional — kalua pig pulled from a real imu, poi, haupia, lomi salmon. The setting is right on the water in Lāhainā town.
**Best for:** Anyone serious about Hawaiian culture. First-time luau-goers who want the real thing.
**Skip if:** You want fire dancers (there aren't any).
## 2. Te Au Moana — Wailea (Wailea Beach Resort)
**Pricing:** ~$175-260 / adult · Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat
Produced by Tihati Productions (the most respected Polynesian entertainment company in the Pacific). Polynesian Revue format — Hawaiian, Tahitian, Samoan, Maori, Tongan. Big-cast show, professional polish. Beachfront in Wailea. Premium food.
**Best for:** Visitors who want one show that covers all of Polynesia. South Maui resort guests.
**Skip if:** You want the most Hawaiian-only show (Old Lāhainā is that).
## 3. Drums of the Pacific — Wailea (Hyatt Regency Maui)
**Pricing:** ~$155-230 / adult · daily
Long-running luau at the Hyatt. Big production, lots of fire knife, energetic. Famous for its closing fire knife number — multiple champions on stage at once. The Polynesian Revue format done with high energy.
**Best for:** Families with kids. Anyone who wants the most kinetic, "wow" show on the island.
**Skip if:** You want intimate or traditional.
## 4. Feast at Lele — Lāhainā (Pacific'O Restaurant)
**Pricing:** ~$280-380 / adult · daily
**This is the high-end one.** Owned by the same group as Old Lāhainā Luau but completely different format. Sit-down five-course menu (not buffet), each course paired with a dance from a different Polynesian culture — Hawaiian course with hula, Samoan course with fire knife, etc. Beachfront in Lāhainā.
**Best for:** Couples, foodies, anyone willing to pay for the most curated experience on Maui.
**Skip if:** Budget is the constraint.
## 5. Royal Lāhainā Luau — Lāhainā (Royal Lāhainā Resort)
**Pricing:** ~$140-200 / adult · Mon, Tue, Wed, Fri, Sun
Mid-tier resort luau. Polynesian Revue format. Beachfront. Smaller than the Wailea luaus, lower price point. Decent food, decent show, nothing exceptional.
**Best for:** Budget-conscious travelers staying on the west side.
**Skip if:** You're going to be near Wailea anyway — the Wailea luaus are better for the marginal $30.
## 6. Wailele Polynesian Luau — Kāʻanapali (Westin Maui)
**Pricing:** ~$170-240 / adult · Sun, Mon, Thu, Fri
The Westin's luau on Kāʻanapali Beach. Standard Polynesian Revue. Big crowd. The view is excellent (beachfront Kāʻanapali). Food is hotel-banquet caliber.
**Best for:** Westin guests, anyone staying in Kāʻanapali who doesn't want to drive.
**Skip if:** You can get to Lāhainā town (5 min south).
## One to be honest about
There are a few smaller "luau experiences" advertised on Maui through Airbnb Experiences and similar platforms. Most of them are not real luaus — they're a hula performance in someone's backyard, occasionally combined with a buffet. They can be charming, but **manage expectations**: it's not the same product as the six listed above.
## Tips specific to Maui
- **The west side (Lāhainā / Kāʻanapali) gets clouded over earlier than the south side (Wailea).** If you want a sunset luau, slight edge to Wailea in summer.
- **Wedding season is March-May and September-October.** Luaus book out fast in those windows. Reserve 2-3 weeks ahead.
- **The drive from Kahului airport to Wailea or Lāhainā is 30-50 min.** Build in buffer time.
- **Tipping at luaus is appreciated** but not expected at the level of a restaurant. $5-10 per couple is generous for the servers.
