Best Sunset Spots in Waikīkī (2026 Locals' Guide)
AlohaCalendar Editorial|May 22, 2026
Waikīkī has roughly the most photographed sunset on Earth — about 4 million people per year stand on its beach and watch the sun drop behind the Pacific. Most of them are standing on the same 100-yard stretch of sand in front of their hotel.
Don't be one of them.
Here's where locals actually go for Waikīkī-area sunset, ranked by experience type — beach + free, drinks + view, photo angle, intimate, big-energy.
## Best free sunset (no drink minimum, just walk up)
### 1. Magic Island (Ala Moana Beach Park, east end)
**The most-photographed sunset on Oʻahu among photographers.** Magic Island is a man-made peninsula at the east end of Ala Moana Beach Park. You walk to the very tip. From there: clear west-facing horizon, Diamond Head to your left, downtown Honolulu skyline behind you. Sunset reflects in the lagoon at low tide. **Free.** Free parking. 10 min walk west of Waikīkī.
### 2. Kūhio Beach Hula Mound (Saturday only)
The free hula performance starts at 6:30pm right around sunset. Hula dancing in front of you, sunset over your shoulder, torches being lit as it gets dark. **Hawaii's best free sunset experience.** Saturdays only. [Find this on AlohaCalendar's free events →](/free)
### 3. Kewalo Basin (just west of Ala Moana)
Same sunset as Magic Island, fewer people. Fishing boats coming in. Surfers in the channel. The kind of spot where two locals will be having a beer at the seawall and nobody else is around.
### 4. Diamond Head Lighthouse Lookout
West-facing lookout at the lighthouse end of Diamond Head Road. Sunset behind the Waikīkī skyline — different angle than the beach gives you, and you get the silhouette of the hotels. Free parking on the road.
### 5. Waikīkī Beach Wall (between Kapahulu and Kalakaua)
The seawall west of Kūhio Beach where locals sit at sunset. You're looking down the length of Waikīkī Beach. Bring a coconut from the ABC Store across the street.
## Sunset + a good drink (without paying $24 for a mai tai)
### 6. House Without a Key (Halekulani)
Beachfront terrace. Live free Hawaiian music starting around sunset. Drinks aren't cheap ($18-24 cocktails), but they're well-made and the setting is unmatched. **Get the table at the corner of the wall** — you face the ocean head-on with Diamond Head over your right shoulder. Reservations help during high season.
### 7. RumFire (Sheraton Waikiki)
Beachfront, larger, more energy. Sunsets here have more of a party vibe. Famous for fire dancers some nights.
### 8. Mai Tai Bar (Royal Hawaiian)
The original Royal Hawaiian "Pink Palace" beachfront bar. Their mai tai is a real one (not a sugar bomb). Expensive but iconic. Sunset is straight ahead.
### 9. Duke's Waikīkī (Outrigger Waikiki)
The biggest sunset crowd. Live music. Beachfront, but louder than House Without a Key. Their hula pie alone justifies the visit.
### 10. Sky Waikīkī
Rooftop bar on top of the Waikiki Beach Walk. Mountain side of Waikīkī, not ocean side — but you get a panoramic view of the Pacific from elevation, and the sunset paints the Koʻolau mountains behind you. The non-obvious sunset move.
## Best photo angles (if you're shooting)
### 11. Kapahulu Groin (Pier at Waikīkī Beach east end)
Concrete pier sticking out into the water. **Best photo angle of Diamond Head at sunset.** The pink-and-orange light on the crater is the shot you've seen on a thousand Hawaii postcards. Get there 45 min before sunset for the warm light.
### 12. Lanai Lookout (after sunset, but worth it)
Past Diamond Head, on the coast road heading east. Lava cliffs, blowholes, big surf. Sunset here is behind you, but the light hitting the cliffs at the golden hour just before sunset is spectacular. Then turn around — sunset over Diamond Head is the shot.
## The intimate, the local, the rare
### 13. Sans Souci Beach (Kaimana Beach)
At the east end of Waikīkī, past the aquarium. Smaller beach, mostly locals, almost zero hotel presence. Calm water. Sunset over the Waikīkī skyline to your west. **The spot if you want to feel like you're not in Waikīkī while still being in Waikīkī.**

## Quick sunset timing for Hawaii (2026)
Hawaii doesn't observe Daylight Saving Time, so sunset times shift more than the mainland. Plan around:
- **Winter (Dec-Feb):** Sunset between 5:50pm and 6:25pm
- **Spring (Mar-May):** 6:25pm to 7:05pm
- **Summer (Jun-Aug):** 7:05pm to 7:20pm — peaks late June
- **Fall (Sep-Nov):** 7:00pm back down to 5:55pm
The golden hour starts ~45 min before sunset. For photography, arrive at least 30 min early.
