Hawaii Holiday Events 2026 — 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years
Hawaii does holidays differently. Tropical Christmas, ocean-side fireworks, and a Halloween tradition in Waikiki that draws thousands of costumed bar-hoppers. Here is the full holiday-by-holiday playbook for 2026 — where to go, when to go, and what to expect.
Memorial Day — May 25, 2026
- Lantern Floating Hawaii — Memorial Day evening, Ala Moana Beach. Tens of thousands of memorial lanterns released into the ocean at sunset. One of the most moving and visually stunning events in Hawaii. Free.
- National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) — sunrise ceremony, free.
- Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremonies — multiple sites.
King Kamehameha Day — June 11
State holiday. The lei-draping ceremony at the King Kamehameha statue in downtown Honolulu (the morning of June 10 by tradition, even though the holiday is June 11) is the centerpiece — the statue gets covered in massive lei dozens of feet long. The Floral Parade through Honolulu is the same week. Free public events on every island.
Independence Day — July 4, 2026
Oahu
- Ala Moana Beach Park fireworks — 8:30pm. The largest public fireworks show in Hawaii. Arrive by 5pm to claim a spot on the beach.
- Magic Island — same view as Ala Moana, slightly less crowded.
- Kailua Beach — windward show, popular with locals.
- Schofield Barracks — open to the public, large show, family-friendly. Bring ID.
- Hilton Hawaiian Village — runs Friday fireworks every Friday year-round, plus an extended July 4 show.
Maui
- Lahaina — fireworks over Front Street.
- Wailea — resort-area fireworks visible from south Maui beaches.
- Kaanapali Beach — multiple resort fireworks.
Big Island
- Kailua-Kona Pier — main Big Island show.
- Hilo Bayfront — second-largest show, lower-key crowd.
Kauai
- Kapaa Beach Park — main island show.
- Poipu Beach — south shore show.
Tip:
Hawaii allows consumer fireworks on July 4th in some areas — neighborhoods with permit licenses can light their own. Expect popping sounds well into 11pm. If you have pets, plan ahead.
Halloween — October 31, 2026
Halloween in Waikiki is famous statewide. Kalakaua Ave fills with costumed crowds, hotel lobbies host costume parties, and bars run themed nights. If you want quieter alternatives:
- Waikiki Halloween — Kalakaua Ave between Kapahulu and Kuhio, evening of Oct 31. Free, family-friendly until about 9pm, then more bar-crawl after. Trick-or-treating in the Waikiki resorts.
- Kakaako Ward Village trick-or-treating — businesses participate. Daytime/early evening, family-friendly.
- Halloween in Lahaina (Maui) — Front Street historically had a major Halloween block party — check current status with Lahaina recovery.
- Wallace Theater drag shows (Chinatown) — adult Halloween with a Hawaii institution.
- Halloween haunted houses — pop up at Aloha Stadium and various community centers in October.
Veterans Day — November 11
- Honolulu Parade — downtown Honolulu, mid-morning.
- Punchbowl ceremony — sunrise.
- Pearl Harbor sites — special ceremonies.
Thanksgiving — November 26, 2026
Hawaii Thanksgiving is more about beach + family + leftover turkey than about big public events.
- Honolulu Turkey Trot — 5K Thanksgiving morning, Kapiolani Park area.
- Hotel buffets — most major Waikiki and resort hotels run elaborate Thanksgiving buffets. Reserve early.
- Day-after fireworks at some resorts.
Honolulu City Lights — December 1 through year-end
Honolulu Hale (city hall, downtown) is decorated with elaborate lights, the giant tree is lit December 1, and the surrounding plaza becomes a family attraction every evening through New Year's. The Electric Light Parade kicks off on opening night. Free.
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day — December 24-25
- Christmas Eve services — most major churches in Honolulu and across the islands.
- Resort Christmas dinners — most Waikiki resorts run Christmas brunches and dinners; reserve well in advance.
- The beach — many local families do beach Christmas. Ala Moana, Kailua, Lanikai are popular.
- Hilton Hawaiian Village Christmas show — annual celebration.
New Year's Eve — December 31, 2026
- Aloha Tower fireworks — Honolulu, midnight.
- Magic Island / Ala Moana fireworks — large public show.
- Hilton Hawaiian Village — extended New Year's fireworks.
- Waikiki Beach — multiple resort shows visible from the beach. Crowds, but spectacular.
- Maui — Lahaina, Wailea, Kaanapali resort shows.
- Big Island — Kailua-Kona pier, Hilo bayfront.
- Kauai — Kapaa, Poipu resort shows.
- Consumer fireworks — Hawaii allows permitted aerial fireworks in residential areas on NYE only. The neighborhood shows are nearly as impressive as the public ones, and they last from about 11:30pm to 12:30am.
Hawaii state-specific holidays worth knowing
- Prince Kuhio Day — March 26. Hawaii state holiday honoring Prince Jonah Kuhio. Public ceremonies at Iolani Palace and Kuhio Beach.
- Lei Day — May 1. Statewide. Lei contests at Kapiolani Park.
- King Kamehameha Day — June 11. Lei draping, floral parade.
- Statehood Day — third Friday in August. Limited public events.
Practical tips for holiday travel in Hawaii
- Book restaurants early. Holiday dinners book up weeks in advance.
- Many businesses close. Christmas Day, Thanksgiving, and Easter are quiet.
- Beaches are open. All city and state beaches stay open on holidays.
- Public transit runs limited holiday schedules.
- Hotel rates spike. December 20 through January 5 is one of the most expensive periods of the year.
- Fireworks are a fire hazard. Hawaii has had brush fires triggered by fireworks. Stick to public shows in dry conditions.
