Hawaii Rainy Day Activities — Indoor Events and Things to Do When the Weather Turns

AlohaCalendar|May 9, 2026

Hawaii's tropical reputation is mostly true, but every island has rain — sometimes for an entire week. Windward Oahu averages 60+ inches a year. Hilo averages 130 inches. So if you are visiting Hawaii during a rainy stretch, here is your indoor playbook.

Oahu rainy day activities

Museums and cultural sites

  • Bishop Museum — Hawaii's largest museum. Hawaiian and Pacific Islander cultural exhibits, planetarium, science center. Plan 3-4 hours. Best rainy-day option on Oahu hands down.
  • Honolulu Museum of Art — significant Asian and Pacific art collections, plus rotating contemporary shows. Free first Wednesday of the month.
  • Iolani Palace — guided tour of the only royal palace on US soil. Self-guided audio tours available. Indoor, well-maintained.
  • Pearl Harbor sites — USS Arizona Memorial, Pacific Aviation Museum, USS Bowfin (submarine), USS Missouri (battleship). Several mostly-indoor options. Plan a half day.
  • Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site — small but excellent museum on Hawaii's missionary era and Hawaiian-printer history.

Indoor markets and shopping

  • Aloha Stadium Swap Meet — 400+ vendors under partial cover. Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday.
  • Ward Village + Ala Moana Center — Hawaii's largest open-air mall, but plenty of indoor restaurants and stores. Food court is solid.
  • International Marketplace (Waikiki) — partial cover, food, shops, occasional indoor cultural performances.

Hands-on activities

  • Lei-making classes — Royal Hawaiian Center offers free classes weekday mornings (materials provided).
  • Hawaiian language conversation circle — Royal Hawaiian Center.
  • Honolulu Cookie Company tour — free factory tour and samples.
  • Dole Plantation — partial cover, the historic train tour and pineapple maze are outdoor, but the plantation store and demos are indoor.
  • Sea Life Park — mostly outdoor but covered walkways and indoor exhibits.
  • Aquarium (Waikiki Aquarium) — small but lovely. Indoor exhibits.

Indoor entertainment

  • Wet'n'Wild Hawaii — counterintuitive, but raining at a water park doesn't matter. Indoor lazy river and several covered slides.
  • Escape rooms — Aloha Escape Rooms (Waikiki), Breakout Waikiki, several others. 60-minute experiences.
  • Movie theaters — Regal Dole Cannery (downtown), Consolidated Ward (Kakaako), Kahala Theaters.
  • Bowling — Aiea Bowl, Stadium Bowl-O-Rama, Hawaiian Brian's. Some have late-night cosmic bowling.
  • Top Golf Honolulu — covered driving bays, food + drinks. Open to non-golfers.

Maui rainy day activities

  • Maui Ocean Center (Wailuku) — large aquarium with shark walk-through tunnel. Mostly indoor.
  • Bailey House Museum (Wailuku) — Hawaii's pre-contact and missionary history.
  • Maui Brewing Company (Kihei) — brewery tour, taproom, food.
  • Maui Tropical Plantation (Waikapu) — train tour is outdoor but covered, the marketplace and demos are indoor.
  • Lahaina Cannery Mall (Lahaina) — indoor mall with restaurants and entertainment.
  • Hawaiian quilt classes — multiple workshops in Wailuku and Lahaina.

Big Island rainy day activities

The Hilo side rains constantly — locals just go about their day. The Kona side is sunnier; if you're stuck in rain on the Kona coast, drive to Hilo or vice versa.

  • Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden (Papaikou) — 40-acre rainforest garden, raincoats provided. Embrace the rain — it's the point.
  • Imiloa Astronomy Center (Hilo) — exhibits on Hawaiian wayfinding, astronomy, planetarium shows.
  • Lyman Museum and Mission House (Hilo) — Hawaiian natural and cultural history.
  • Big Island Candies (Hilo) — factory tour, free samples, irresistible.
  • Pacific Tsunami Museum (Hilo) — sobering and excellent.
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park — visitor center is indoor, drive out to lava viewing if conditions permit. Even in rain, it's atmospheric.
  • Mountain Thunder Coffee tour (Kailua-Kona) — covered tour of an organic coffee farm.

Kauai rainy day activities

Kauai is the wettest island — Mount Waialeale is one of the rainiest places on earth. Always have a Plan B.

  • Kauai Museum (Lihue) — small but high-quality island history.
  • Kilohana Plantation (Lihue) — historic plantation home with shops, restaurants, train ride (covered).
  • Limahuli Garden — visitor center indoor, gardens covered partly by tree canopy.
  • Spouting Horn observation — outdoor, but more dramatic in the rain.
  • Hawaiian Mission Hale (Hanalei) — historic mission house, small but interesting.
  • Indoor luau — Smith's Family Garden Luau has covered seating and continues in rain.

Indoor cultural workshops (any island)

  • Lei making
  • Lauhala (pandanus) weaving
  • Ukulele lessons
  • Hula introductory classes
  • Hawaiian language basics
  • Poke-making classes
  • Coffee cupping (Big Island)
  • Surfboard shaping classes (Oahu, Maui)

Many resorts offer these free or at low cost to guests; community centers offer them to walk-ins.

Tip: Hawaii rain is usually short

Outside of Hilo and the windward sides, Hawaii rain is usually a passing shower. If it's pouring at 9am on the Kona side, there's a strong chance it will be sunny by 11am. Don't cancel beach plans for the day — just drive to a different part of the island. Leeward sides (south and west) are reliably drier than windward (north and east).

If the rain is settled in, our Oahu events calendar filters for indoor events specifically. Live music in hotel lounges, museum special exhibits, and indoor theater all tend to underbook on rainy days — easier to walk in.
