July 4th in Hawaii — Fireworks, Luaus, and Where to Watch

John, AlohaCalendar|May 22, 2026
Hawaiʻi has a weird relationship with fireworks. They're technically illegal year-round outside of New Year's Eve — and even then, only certain types are permitted. So when July 4th rolls around, **the State of Hawaii's permitted shows are the only real shows you'll see all year.** That makes the weekend bigger than it looks on paper. Here's the full Hawaii July 4th plan, by island. ## Oʻahu ### Ala Moana Beach Park fireworks **Sunday, July 5 · 8:30pm** The largest free fireworks display in Hawaiʻi, launched from Magic Island. Setup starts at noon; the beach fills by 5pm; the show runs ~25 minutes after sunset (around 8:25pm depending on the year). **Parking:** Don't even try the Ala Moana lot — book Magic Island side or use the Ala Moana Center garages and walk. TheBus 20 runs straight from Waikiki. ### Kailua-Kona's Independence Day Parade **Saturday, July 4 · morning** Old-school small-town American parade through downtown Kailua-Kona. Floats, school bands, classic cars. Free, no tickets, the kind of thing that makes you feel like you're in a 1950s movie. ## Maui ### Lahaina July 4th events Returns post-fire with smaller-scale community festivities along the front street zone. Watch local news for last-minute changes. Skip the big-resort fireworks shows — overpriced and often canceled due to wind. ### Kāʻanapali fireworks Most years, the Kāʻanapali Beach Resort area runs a free fireworks display over the ocean. Visible from any beach in the area. ## Big Island ### Hilo July 4th Liliuokalani Gardens hosts the main public event. Bayfront fireworks visible from Hilo Bay. ### Kona July 4th Free events at Kailua Pier through the day, fireworks over the ocean at sunset. ## Kauaʻi ### Lihue Town Center Smaller community celebration with food, music, and a fireworks display visible from Kalapaki Beach. --- ## What to bring - Beach blanket or low chair (not a tall chair — be courteous behind you) - Bug spray (mosquitoes love sunset hours) - Light sweater (Hawaii nights get breezier than people expect) - Cash for food trucks - **A trash bag** — leave the beach better than you found it. Real one. ## What to skip - Drone shows that "replace" fireworks — they're not the same, and Hawaii's wind makes them flake out - Paid "rooftop viewing parties" at hotels for $100+/person. The free beach view is the same view. - Buying fireworks from Chinatown stands. They're illegal outside of NYE. Don't. --- **[See every July 4th weekend event in Hawaii →](/july-4)** Want the full Hawaii weekly digest? [Subscribe here](/join) — one email a week, locals + visitors both welcome.
