Best Things to Do on Kauaʻi in 2026 — Locals' Guide

Kauaʻi is the geologically oldest of the main Hawaiian islands and the most undeveloped — half the island can't even be driven to. The eastern coast (Lihue, Wailua, Kapaʻa) is the populated side. The north shore (Hanalei, Princeville) is the postcard side. The west (Waimea, Polihale) is dry and dramatic. Here's the locals' breakdown. ## The unmissable Three ### Nā Pali Coast (only seen by boat, helicopter, or foot) 17 miles of 4,000-foot cliffs dropping straight to the ocean. **Three ways to see it:** 1. **Catamaran/zodiac boat tour** from Port Allen (south) or Hanalei (north) — half day, $150-250. Best in summer (calmer water). 2. **Helicopter tour** — 1 hr, $300-400. See the whole coast plus Waimea Canyon. Doors-off options. 3. **Hike the Kalalau Trail** — full Nā Pali traverse, 22 miles round trip, 2+ days, permits required well in advance. Day hike to Hanakapiʻai Beach (first 2 miles) doesn't need permits. ### Waimea Canyon (the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific") 14 miles long, 3,600 feet deep. Multiple lookouts along Highway 550. Stunning architecture. ## North Shore vs. South Shore weather - **North = rainier**, lush, more dramatic - **South = sunnier**, drier, more resort Most visitors split 2-3 nights each, or pick one side and accept the trade-off. ## Quick logistics - **Lihue Airport (LIH)** is the only major airport. Direct flights from major U.S. cities. - **Rent a car** mandatory.
