King Kamehameha Day in Hawaii — June 11 2026 Guide
AlohaCalendar Editorial|May 22, 2026
Every year on June 11, Hawaii observes King Kamehameha Day — a state holiday honoring the chief who unified the Hawaiian Islands in 1810. Federal and state offices close. Schools close. And **the events are some of the most photogenic of the entire Hawaii calendar.**
If you're going to be in Hawaii on June 11, here's how to plan around it.
## Quick reference
- **Date:** Thursday, June 11, 2026
- **Status:** State holiday (offices, banks, schools closed)
- **Main event:** Floral Parade through Waikīkī, morning
- **Backup event:** Statue lei-draping at the King Kamehameha statue downtown, evening prior
## The statue lei-draping ceremony — June 10 (evening)
Possibly the most photographed Hawaiian cultural moment outside of luaus. The King Kamehameha statue stands across from ʻIolani Palace in downtown Honolulu. The evening before Kamehameha Day, **18 to 20 massive lei** — some 12 feet long, made of plumeria, ti leaf, maile, and orchids — are draped over the statue's outstretched arms.
The lei come from hālau hula (hula schools), the Royal Order of Kamehameha, and civic organizations from every island.
**To watch:** Honolulu downtown, corner of King Street and Punchbowl Street, around 4-6pm on June 10. Free. Best photos are taken from across the street near ʻIolani Palace.
## The Floral Parade — June 11 morning
**Honolulu's Floral Parade is the biggest Hawaiian cultural parade of the year.** Started in 1969. Now runs Hawaii Convention Center → Kapiʻolani Park, ~5 miles through Waikīkī.
**Format:**
- Pa'u riders — women on horseback in long traditional skirts, one princess per island
- Marching bands (state schools + military)
- Hula hālau (50+ different schools dancing in the streets)
- Decorated floats from civic groups, schools, businesses
- Royal Hawaiian Band
**Best viewing spots:**
1. **Kalakaua Avenue in Waikīkī** — the main stretch, but very crowded
2. **Beretania Street + Kalakaua** corner — slightly less crowded, good photo angles
3. **Saratoga Road** end of Kalakaua — paradetail end, quieter
**Timing:** parade starts ~9am, takes about 3 hours to pass any one spot. Show up 30 min before if you want a curbside seat.
**What it'll do to your day:**
- **DON'T try to drive through Waikīkī between 8am-1pm.** Streets are closed.
- Walk, bus, or stay in your hotel.
- Traffic across the rest of Honolulu also moves slow.
## Statewide events
Each island holds its own celebration:
- **Big Island (Kohala)** — Kamehameha's birthplace. Smaller, more reverent ceremony at the Kamehameha statue in Kapaʻau.
- **Maui (Wailuku)** — Hawaiian cultural festival at the IAO Valley monument.
- **Kauaʻi (Lihue)** — Mokihana Festival aligned with Kamehameha Day weekend.
- **Molokaʻi (Kaunakakai)** — small but heartfelt local event.
## Who was King Kamehameha I?
Born around 1758 on the Big Island. Unified all the Hawaiian islands under one rule between 1782 and 1810 — through war, alliances, and political marriage. Established a unified law system. Welcomed early Western contact while maintaining Hawaiian sovereignty. Died in 1819. The Kamehameha dynasty ruled Hawaii until 1872.
**Why the statue?** The most famous one is the 1880 bronze in front of ʻIolani Palace in Honolulu. There are duplicates in Hilo, in Washington D.C.'s Statuary Hall (Hawaii's contribution), and in Kapaʻau on the Big Island.
