Lūʻau Guide for Hawaii Visitors (2026): How to Pick the Right One
AlohaCalendar Editorial|May 23, 2026
A lūʻau is a Hawaiian feast — but the word covers everything from a backyard family gathering to a million-dollar hotel production with fire dancers. If you're visiting Hawaiʻi, here's how to pick the right one for your group.
## What every lūʻau should have
- **Imu ceremony** — unearthing the kālua pig from the underground pit
- **Hawaiian food** — kālua pork, poi, lomilomi salmon, haupia, poke
- **Hula** — both **kahiko** (ancient, drum-and-chant) and **ʻauana** (modern, slack-key)
- **Mai tai or fruit punch** — usually open bar
- **Royal Court procession** — pāʻū riders or hula-led entrance
## Red flags (skip these)
- "Polynesian revue" only — no actual Hawaiian content
- Fire dancers as the headline act (fire dancing is Samoan/Fijian, not Hawaiian)
- Pre-plated food (a real lūʻau is buffet-style, generous, family-feel)
- Plastic flower lei (use fresh)
- $39 special — that's a hotel marketing line; expect $130–250/adult
## Best lūʻau by island
### Oʻahu
- **Paradise Cove Lūʻau** (Ko Olina) — $135 adult, family-run since 1986
- **Polynesian Cultural Center** (Lāʻie) — $90+, day-park + evening show
- **Diamond Head Lūʻau** (Waikīkī Aquarium) — $200, intimate, sunset
### Maui
- **Old Lāhainā Lūʻau** — $145 adult, the gold standard, books out 60 days ahead
- **Feast at Lele** — $235 adult, multi-course Polynesian regions
- **Te Au Moana** (Wailea Beach Marriott) — $190
### Big Island
- **Royal Kona Resort Lūʻau** — $145 adult, oceanfront
- **Sheraton Kona** — $135, intimate
### Kauaʻi
- **Smith's Tropical Paradise** (Wailua) — $115, gardens + boat ride
