Driving Kamehameha Highway from Haleʻiwa to Sunset Beach takes 20 minutes. In those 20 minutes, you pass 10 of the most famous beaches in the world. Here's what each one is best for.
## The 10 (west to east)
### 1. Haleʻiwa Aliʻi Beach
**For:** Beginner surf + family. Lifeguarded year-round. **Skip if:** big swell day — gets crowded with WSL crews.
### 2. Laniakea Beach (Turtle Beach)
**For:** Watching turtles haul out (volunteers cordon them off). **Skip if:** no parking — it's street-only, fills by 9 AM.
### 3. Chun's Reef
**For:** Intermediate longboard surf. **Skip if:** beginner — the reef is sharp.
### 4. Waimea Bay
**For:** Winter big-wave spectator. Summer family swim. **Skip if:** stormy winter — current is lethal.
### 5. Three Tables (Pūpūkea)
**For:** Summer snorkel + tide pools. **Skip if:** winter — waves break right onto the rocks.
### 6. Sharks Cove (Pūpūkea)
**For:** Summer snorkel, the best on the North Shore. **Skip if:** winter — closed by surf.
### 7. ʻEhukai Beach Park (Banzai Pipeline)
**For:** Winter big-wave spectator. Watch Pipe Masters from the sand. **Skip if:** summer — the wave is just calm.
### 8. Pūpūkea-Banzai Tidepools (Shark's Cove sandy side)
**For:** Tide pool exploring with kids. **Skip if:** high tide.
### 9. Sunset Beach
**For:** Watching big winter sunset surf. **Skip if:** crowded contest days.
### 10. Velzyland (V-Land)
**For:** Local surf scene. **Skip if:** you don't know anyone — locals are protective.
## Driving tips
- Kamehameha Highway is one lane each way; passing zones are rare
- Leave Honolulu by 7 AM on weekends to beat traffic
- Parking is street-only at most beaches — be respectful of residential properties
