Things to Do in Kailua With Kids
AlohaCalendar|May 21, 2026
Kailua is what people *think* of when they think of Hawaii — palm trees, sand that squeaks underfoot, water you can stand in for an hour without losing the kids in the chop. Here's a half-day plan that works whether you live here or you're visiting for the week.
## Kailua Beach Park (mornings, before 10am)
The wind picks up by mid-morning, so the calm window is early. Park at the south end near Kalaheo Ave — restrooms, showers, shade trees. Bring buckets and shovels; the sand is fine enough for proper castle work. Lifeguards on duty.
## Lanikai Pillbox Hike (older kids, 8+)
Half a mile up, the trail to the World War II observation pillboxes is steep but short. Big payoff at the top — both Mokulua Islands framed in turquoise. Go in the cooler hour. Cement shoes if it's been raining.
## Kailua Town breakfast options
- **Kalapawai Café** (Kailua Rd): kid menu, real coffee, shaded patio.
- **Moke's Bread & Breakfast**: liliko'i pancakes are non-negotiable. Plan for a wait on weekends.
- **Boots & Kimo's**: macadamia nut pancakes that built the reputation. Worth the line once.
## Sunday Kailua Farmers' Market
8am-noon, Kailua Town Center parking lot. Mochi, fresh papaya, and the rare Hawaii event where browsing is part of the fun for kids under 10. Free entry, easy parking, real Hawaii.
## What's actually on this weekend
Browse family events in Oahu this weekend — keiki hula, free music in the park, library reading hours. Most are free and most aren't on the big tourist lists.
## Honest disclaimers
Lanikai parking gets towed quickly. Use Kailua Beach Park as your base; walk the 10 minutes to Lanikai if that's the day's mission.
