When Is Whale Season in Hawaii? (2026 Calendar + Best Spots)
AlohaCalendar Editorial|May 22, 2026
Every winter, about 10,000 humpback whales swim 3,000 miles from Alaska to Hawaii. They give birth, mate, and sing in the warm shallow channels between the islands. Then they head back. It's one of the largest mammal migrations on Earth — and the front-row seats are essentially all of Hawaii's west-facing coast.
## The short answer
**Hawaii whale season runs December 1 through April 30.** Peak viewing is **January, February, and early March.** Stragglers stay into mid-May.
## When you'll actually see whales
| Month | What's happening | Likelihood you'll see one |
|---|---|---|
| Nov | First arrivals | 10–25% chance per outing |
| Dec | Population building | 30–60% |
| Jan | Full season | 75–90% |
| Feb | Peak | 90%+ |
| Mar | Peak winding down | 85% |
| Apr | Most leaving | 50% |
| May 1–15 | Last stragglers | 15–30% |
## Best islands to see whales
### Maui — the whale capital
The shallow ʻAuʻau Channel between Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Kahoʻolawe is the calving nursery. **Maui sees more whales than any other island.** Lāhainā, Kāʻanapali, and the south shore (Wailea, Kihei, Mākena) all have great shore viewing.
### Big Island
West side beaches (Kona, Hāpuna, Makalawena). The Kohala Coast viewpoints are open year-round but light up in February.
### Oʻahu
South shore (Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail, Diamond Head Lighthouse Lookout) and the Ka Iwi Coast. Less density than Maui but still good.
### Kauaʻi
South shore (Poʻipū) and the Nā Pali Coast boat tours. Often the most dramatic when whales breach against the green cliffs.
## How to see them
### From shore (free)
Just sit on a west-facing beach for 30 min in season. Bring binoculars. Watch for spouts, fluke slaps, breaches.
**Top free shore-viewing spots:**
- McGregor Point (Maui, between Wailuku and Lāhainā) — official whale lookout
- Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail (Oʻahu) — 2-mile paved trail
- Makapuʻu Beach / Sandy Beach lookouts (Oʻahu)
- Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area (Big Island)
- Diamond Head Lighthouse area (Oʻahu)
### Boat tours
- **Pacific Whale Foundation** (Maui) — nonprofit, naturalist-led, ~$70–110
- **Hawaii Nautical** (Maui + Oʻahu) — multiple options
- **Captain Zodiac** (Big Island Kona) — small-group raft tours
- **Holo Holo Charters** (Kauaʻi) — Nā Pali + whale combo
Most tours guarantee a whale sighting in peak season or refund.
### Snorkel sound
You can often hear whales singing underwater while snorkeling in winter. Hold your breath, listen. They're sometimes miles away.
## Whale watching rules
NOAA federal law: **stay 100 yards (300 ft) from whales** at all times. Boats must shut off engines at 100 yards; kayaks/SUPs at 50 yards. The whales come to you, not the other way around.
## Other things happening during whale season
December–March is also Hawaii's big-wave surf season on north shores, the (relatively) cooler dry season, and includes most of the holiday tourism peak. Plan accordingly:
