North Shore

Country side of Oahu. World-class winter surf, food trucks, slow days, and the towns time forgot — for the better.

About North Shore

The North Shore is the antidote to Waikīkī. About an hour up the H-1 then the H-2 then Kamehameha Highway, you arrive at a country stretch of two-lane road, food trucks, surf shops, and a coastline that produces the biggest paddleable waves in the world for about three months a year.

Winter (November–March) the surf is the show. The Banzai Pipeline at ʻEhukai Beach Park, Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay — all within a 10-mile stretch. The Triple Crown of Surfing competition runs at all three from late November into December. You can stand on the beach and watch the world's best surfers ride three-story waves for free.

Summer (April–October) flips the script. The ocean goes flat as a lake. Sharks Cove (Pūpūkea) becomes a snorkel pond. Waimea Bay turns into a calm beach for families. You can hike Ka'ena Point to the western tip of the island and meet no one.

The towns are small. Haleʻiwa has the cafés and the surf shops. Pūpūkea has the snorkel cove. Sunset Beach is mostly homes. Bring cash — most food trucks don't take cards. Bring patience — traffic on the two-lane road during winter is brutal.
