Wailuku
Maui's old town capital. Plantation-era main street, ʻĪao Valley needle, the local heart of the island.
About Wailuku
Wailuku is Maui's county seat and the largest town on the island. Most visitors stay in Wailea or Lāhainā and never come here — but Wailuku is where Maui locals work, shop, and live.
Main Street has been restored to its 1930s plantation-era look — wooden storefronts, Hawaiian shave ice shops, vinyl record stores, and the Iao Theater (1928), which still hosts community shows. First-Friday art walks are the highlight of every month.
ʻĪao Valley State Monument is 4 minutes from downtown. The valley's signature 'needle' (a vertical 1,200-ft basalt spire) rises from the lush rainforest floor. The site is sacred — King Kamehameha's army fought a critical battle here in 1790.
