Waikīkī
Two miles of beach, a thousand restaurants, the most photographed sunset on Oahu — and most of it is free.
About Waikīkī
Waikīkī is a state of mind that happens to also be a neighborhood. Two miles of beach stretch from the Hilton Hawaiian Village in the west to Diamond Head in the east, fronting the world's most concentrated tourist district — but the locals haven't left. Catch sunset at Kaimana Beach Park (the east end) and you'll be sitting next to families who've been coming there for fifty years.
The name means 'spouting water' — a reference to the streams that once flowed from the Koʻolau mountains across the Waikīkī flats to the sea. The streams are now under concrete. The Ala Wai Canal channels them out. But the wave-shaped beach Waikīkī was famous for in the 1920s is still here, still mellow, still a textbook longboard wave.
Day-to-day, Waikīkī moves on a rhythm: 6 AM joggers and surf-checkers, 9 AM beach-towels-out, noon-to-3 PM hottest sun, 5 PM hula at Kuhio Beach Hula Mound (free, every night the weather allows), 6 PM sunset, 9 PM tiki bars, midnight room-service surfers planning the morning. The locals run on the same rhythm — most just go home for the evening shift.
Stay where the price feels right. Eat where the line is local. Walk Kalākaua at least once after dark. The thing about Waikīkī is that it earns its reputation — you just have to slow down enough to see it.
